The Facebook War

As I write this, Facebook is down all across the globe. Social media addicts are checking it constantly. It will be a major topic of conversation at Thanksgiving tables all across the country. What no one realizes is that this isn’t just a symptom of an unreliable back-end. This outage represents damage done by a major salvo in an ongoing war between Facebook and certain Russian secret services. Facebook is very powerful and the Russians have learned that as effective as their misinformation campaigns were in getting their stooge elected in 2016, they need to up the game and own it competely. This is why Zuckerberg looks so stressed these days. It’s not because Americans are bitching about the blurry line the platform maintains between responsibility and free speech. It’s because his family and everything he’s built is under threat of a Mafiya with nuclear weapons, and he’s got just enough self interest and patriotism left to know he can’t just buy an island and give up.

Yeah, I just thought of all this while waking up this fine rainy day, but I’m not at all convinced there ain’t something to it. What sayest though?

  1. Not one single person I encountered at Thanksgiving made any mention, whatsoever, about Facebook, one way or another. Not, at least, in my hearing. But the gang I hang with on Thanksgiving are a lovely odd bunch of people, most of them artists.
